A copy of our quick felting needle guide is sent to you via Etsy messages upon purchase for easy reference.
Each size comes in a separate, labeled plastic storage case with different colors on the non-sharp side to indicate gauge or purpose.
The gauge number indicates how coarse or fine the needle is and the diameter of the needle. The higher the number, such as 42, the finer the gauge. The 42T is my favorite felt needle tool, extra thin it really finishes a felted animal and reduces surface holes. Love it.
A fine needle is used for detail work since it is smaller. A coarser needle would be a workhorse to start a project or do large areas.
This felting needle variety pack is color-coded, labeled, and coordinates with multi-colored handles matching the multi-colored felting needles.
Each gauge is labeled on the package for easy reference and includes 35 needles in total.
This felting needle set includes 5 each of these Standard triangular needles:
36T gauge (coarse) - bronze
38T gauge - green
40T gauge - red
42T gauge (super fine) - black
And, 3 each of these felting needles:
Spiral felting needles reduce surface holes of your felted creations
3 x 36S gauge spiral - pink
3 x 40S gauge spiral - purple
Star felting needles are great for attaching felted pieces and forms
3 x star - gold
Similar to reverse felting needles, cones create textures like fur and fuzz
3 x 36C gauge cone - white
3 x 40C gauge cone - red

What does the gauge mean on the felting needles?
The gauge indicates how coarse or fine the needle is and the diameter of the needle. The higher the number or size, such as L for large or 42, the finer the gauge and the thinner the needle.
36T gauge - The tallest of the needles and goes the deepest into the wool. Often called the workhorse is used to start a project and get it going faster. This is what I use in the multi-tool handle when I am making a wool painting. Use it to tack down large areas, and make pompoms and ball shapes of felted animals before adding the details.
38T gauge - Middle of the road gauge needle. When adding details to the project, switch to this needle to tack down ears, tails, outlines, and such.
40T gauge - Detail and surface work. Use this needle when you are nearing completion. This change-up will reduce the appearance of holes in your finished piece.
42T gauge - Black capped and awesome for detailing, small areas needing a bit more firmness and finishing the surface of your piece.
Star needles - are barbed on FOUR sides instead of triangular-sided and are used for joining felted pieces together, coarse wools, and quick felting of areas.
Spiral - Twisted at the tips and used for surface work
Cone needles - Used to create textures like fur or fuzzy areas, it is tapered, and good for firming up a surface area.
What does the T in 36T felting needle mean?
The "T" stands for triangular which is the shape of the sharp end of the needle. There are also spirals (S), cones (C), and star shapes which yield different textures and functions.

QUESTIONS + FAQS:
What is wool needle felting?
It is the art and craft of forming felted animals, sculptures, or 2D wool paintings using wool roving and specialty barbed needles. By poking the fibers with the barbed needles, the wool fibers are locked into place making soft creations. It is said it is a forgiving craft since one can easily remove poked-in areas quickly to redo until you are happy with the outcome. It is a relaxing and easy new craft for beginners. Take a stab at it!
Who can needle felt?
Our needle felting kits and sewing kits are kits for beginners but not small children. The tools used to needle felt are very sharp and dangerous. The DIY kits are labeled as adult craft kits suitable for teens and tweens with adult supervision.
The wool-felted animals felted with the wool are adorable. They are not toys or stuffed animals and are considered home decor.
Needle felting uses barbed needles and awls that are awl-fully sharp and dangerous. It is a fun and relaxing craft recommended for those with good manual dexterity, children over the age of 11, and those without visual impairments. Good eyesight is a must given the sharp and somewhat dangerous tools.
