Description
LeedyMarching Snare Drum US ARMY post WWI 1920 or bit later per the chrome badge it. This badge was applied in the 1920s. Owners Grandfather was in the Great War (World War I) and was in his unit's Marching band. He was from North Dakota, the brass name plate has another name than he, but he ended up with drum. Sadly, I do not know story or who "
PAUL SHERBURNE
" of "
MADISON No. DAK.
" was. He may have retired or was a casualties of the War. Most likely this was a National Guard unit. The drum most likely never went to France. The owner Grand father was
Sargent Walter L. Dyce
. He returned from the war un-wounded , Lucky man considering the engagements he was in during the war.
The Metal Case is lined with a patterned burgundy cloth but in ruff shape except for the lid. Leather strap and handle remained it surprisingly good shape for over 100 years. Original Drumsticks come with drum. this a large and heavy unit and I will not know the exact weight and size till it sells. FYI
Leedy Drums are famous and well known, they made the
Purdue
Football programs Drum "the Worlds Large Bass Drum" in 1921 and is still use TODAY!
Leedy Manufacturing Co. of Indianapolis Indiana was in the musical instruments business from 1867 to 1958, till it was bought up and the name used for one more year. There is a chromed plate on the drum
" Leedy Mfg. Co. INDIANAPOLIS, IND."
There are craftsman's notes and signatures inside the drum (I have photos) a Serial # is stamped in the wood "
X8570".
I believe the snare head (Bottom) was replaced and has a
crown
logo rubber stamped in blue ink on it (English?) Drum weight is 7lbs 11oz. Case is more.
I have lots more photos, I am not a musician. Sold as is. But I love old military historical items and this is one! Thanks for looking.
Footnote I will be traveling just before the 4th of July and returning just after. But I will be looking at my e-mails so shipping a large item maybe delayed.
